The Meiji MT6500 series phase contrast microscopes are ideal for asbestos fiber counting. Manufactured to meet NIOSH 7400 and OSHA ID 160 standards, the ML6500 series microscopes offer a powerful built-in 6V 30W Koehler halogen lamp with variable intensity control.

The microscope's optics include SM Plan DIN brightfield objectives in a quadruple nosepiece. It holds a 10X objective and a 40XS BF S. Plan Achromat Positive Phase contrast objective for total magnification settings of 100x and 400x with the included DIN standard HWF10X and DIN focusing HWF10X eyepieces. The HWF10X eyepiece includes a Walter Beckett reticle (Type G-22 with 3:1 aspect ratio) that also meets NIOSH and OSHA standards. An achromatic condenser (NA 1.25) for focusing light includes an iris, filter tray, and a centerable 40X positive phase annulus in a sliding mount.

Three models are available: monocular, binocular, and trincular. The advantage of the trinocular model is that all three ports can be used simultaneously, which is useful for video or photo microscopy.

The Meiji MT6500 series uses phase contrast for asbestos fiber counting. This method is used primarily for estimating asbestos concentrations of airborne fibers. It is quick and can be performed on-site for rapid determination of the concentration of asbestos fibers in the air. Phase contrast microscopy does not positively differentiate between asbestos and other fibers. Positive identification of asbestos fiber must be performed using PLM or electron microscopy.
